When the City's program is the right call
Residents can book free junk pickup appointments through San José 311, and there's no limit on how many appointments you make. Each one takes up to 12 items from the City's list of acceptable items. You set them out up to 24 hours before the appointment. If you live in an apartment, your property manager tells you where items go. If you have a couch, a mattress, and an old washer, and you can get them out to the curb, use it.

The City's program depends on you getting everything out of the house and to the set-out spot yourself. That gets hard fast when it's a whole house, a garage packed with boxes and odds and ends, heavy pieces upstairs, or a closing date that doesn't leave time to schedule several appointments.
